-senator barack obama who gutted the guest worker provision out of that immigration reform and effectively killed it off. so it's great that now durbin is on board along with a number of republicans. the big question is, though, later today we're going to hear from the president. is the president really serious about immigration reform? after all, marco rubio has been out there, but has the white house reached out to him so far? absolutely not. >>gretchen: here's the plan they're talking about, this gang of eight. register and pass a background check. you would be required to do that if you're illegal. pay a fine and back taxes. earn probationary legal status. learn english. continue to pay taxes. show work history and then get a green card and then apply for citizenship. effectively you would go to the back of the line. so this is a bipartisan effort. remember, some of these commissions have come together in the past, in the last four years, specifically about the debt and the president hasn't necessarily taken on the plan that they have come up with. so this will be really important to see if i

. i don't need a lecture from barack obama about bipartisanship. he was never very good at it in the senate. if you speak tomorrow about immigration reform, i hope you don't suggest you're going to take a pathway to citizenship and delink it from the border. and if you do, you know what will happen, 20 million illegal immigrants years from now. >> greta: in 2009 i listened to the speech and at the time a democratic house and democratic senate. why would he not take time for immigration reform. because you can't move multiple bills through congress and eat and chew gum at the same time or wasn't his heart in it. >> in 2008 he promised immigration reform in the first year of his presidency and led off with obamacare and that took all the oxygen out of the room. >> greta: he can't do both? >> by the time obamacare was done, took the whole year and the place was divided and bitter. and all the political capital we had in that first year of his presidency, he picked the most divisive issue he could find, rather than bringing us together. he passed a bill on party line votes,

is president obama will use the voice and influence to further this approach. however, if what he offers is a process for the undocumented that is more lenient and faster and unfair it won't bode well for reform. so senator rubio taking a critical stance of the president without the president actually laying out a plan and we know and you talk to folks on the radio all day, when you mention the word amnesty that is one of those fire words that is going to get a certain portion of this country pretty angry. >> it's true. it's in a category with guns and global warming and -- >> it is a loaded word, it is loaded. >> you got it. listen. the stakes are high for senator rubio because the consensus is he has his eye on 2016 or 2020 and to play a role on a group like this, with senator mccain, is fraught with some peril. i like the fact they're both involved. i like the fact that proceeding the president, you have a bipartisan approach compared to the president coming forth and saying here's my plan and only supported by ds but the fly in the ointment might be how do you assure folks that we ha
